DONATE NOW TO SUPPORT SIMS

Since its establishment in 2005, Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) has received substantial funding for research infrastructure (laboratories, aquaria, boats etc.) but this does NOT cover the costs of actually doing the research. Research is vital if we are to achieve a sustainable marine environment and to help us understand the impacts of climate change. The SIMS Foundation has accepted the challenge of raising $500,000 to enable us to significantly upgrade the research effort at SIMS.

Included in this effort will be the appointment of one or more post-doctoral research fellows.  The early post-doctoral time generally is the most creative time of a researcher’s career. This is the time when they can make a difference – they can explore novel ideas that will change the way people think – leading to significant advances in our ability to understand and manage our marine ecosystems.

DONATE NOW to help make a difference. If you wish to involve your friends in this project, then visit the fund raising home page of SIMS Foundation and create your own fund raising page. You can then use this to email your friends and get them involved too.

Many thanks for your interest and support. We do appreciate it.

SIMS Foundation supports the Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS). SIMS is a collaborative research institute, founded in 2005 when a waterfront site at Chowder Bay became available from the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust. It brings together scientists from the universities in the greater Sydney Region and from several state and federal government departments, the Australian Museum,  and the University of Wollongong.

The Institute is uniquely positioned both in a geographical and a structural sense to significantly advance research into our marine environment.   Geographically, because SIMS is located on the South- East Australian seaboard, a climate change hot spot, and structurally because the collaborative research profile of the Institute harnesses the strengths of NSW’s leading marine scientists and universities.

SIMS is an innovative multidisciplinary marine science facility, providing a focal point for:

World class collaborative marine research;
Provision of marine research for policy makers and managers;
Research training and teaching in the marine sciences;
National and international collaboration.

The need for research is urgent. Operational funding from universities and governments covers the basic costs but that is all. Support by the SIMS Foundation will enable SIMS to tackle things that are most needed – but which are not covered by university or government funding. With your support, we can initiate innovative research, attract top quality PhD candidates and post-doctoral fellows and provide state-of-the-art facilities to advance marine research.
